CHECK OUT THE HEARTBROKEN VIDEO!!
Heartbroken was recorded on September 24th, 1992 at Jerry Soto's Soto Sound Studio. It appears as track #7 on Mississippi Heat's first recording, STRAIGHT FROM THE HEART (1993). It was recorded in one take, with no overdubs. Not even Robert Covington's vocals were redone. Robert had never seen the song's lyrics before but he knew about Pierre's close relationship with bass player and singer Lawrence "Lil' Sonny" Wimberly to whom this song is dedicated. Sonny had died a year earlier on August 24th so Pierre wrote "Heartbroken" in his memory. Sonny was to have a decisive influence on his life's direction. As with Junior Wells who had welcomed him with open arms several years earlier in the early 1970's, Sonny also must be credited for giving Pierre his blessing and encouragement to pursue a musical career. This is perhaps Pierre's most emotional harp solo ever recorded (along perhaps with Blues for George Baze a few years later). This song remains important to us after 20 years, so we decided to reintroduce it as a montage with these great musicians; the fact that several of them have left us make this particularly worthy to be documented.
